Director's Description

There are more than two million adults living in the United States with congenital heart conditions today, thanks to advances in care. If you’re one, you know you need special treatments, support, and care to maintain your good health.

The Adult Congenital Heart Program at the WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts in their fields. We have heart doctors experienced in congenital heart conditions in children and specialists who understand the heart diseases adults may face later in life. We are here to address your individual health needs while helping you resolve obstacles that might affect your well-being.

Congenital heart defects are some of the most common birth defects. We treat many congenital heart conditions in children. We apply the same approach to our adult patients. Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) have repaired lesions that need to be checked on a regular basis.

Treating an adult with a congenital heart condition calls for an understanding of their condition, medical history, and treatment goals. We bring these skills and experience to the exam room for each of our patients. Here at WVU Medicine, we work closely with our adult Heart and Vascular Institute colleagues with surgical planning and specialized heart failure treatment.

We provide Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) outpatient clinics weekly at WVU Medicine Childrens. We also provide outreach clinics including a clinic in Wheeling WV, and Martinsburg WV.

Our expertise in the treatment of congenital heart disease and state-of-the-art equipment allow us to treat your heart condition using advanced technology for echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cardiac magnetic angiography (MRA), computed tomography angiogram (CTA), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, cardiac catheterization, and electrophysiology studies.

The WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic connects you with the specialists you need as you become an adult. This may include referrals to different subspecialists, a dietitian or weight management program, or a social worker for support at home. We’ll help you find an internist who will collaborate with us for your primary care. If you’re ready to start a family, we’ll guide you to our Cardio-Obstetric Service who will make sure you and your baby stay healthy and strong. Your individual treatment plan is unique, and we’ll help you get the care you need.

Our team of specialists is prepared and on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to take care of you, should you be admitted to the hospital.
