Director's Description
The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) program at VCU Health Pauley Heart Center spans numerous departments across the health system, providing long-term care for patients with congenital heart disease. With one of the most comprehensive ACHD programs in Virginia, Pauley’s ACHD team collaborates with pediatric cardiologists to provide comprehensive care for children with congenital heart disease, eventually helping them transition to adult care provided by one of Pauley’s ACHD specialists. As part of this transition, our team ensures each child is educated about their condition, treatments they’ve had, and their medical history. This facilitates the transition to adult care later in life by providing the resources needed to manage congenital heart defects and live a happy, active life. As adults, our ACHD patients have access to all of Pauley’s services, including cardiac arrhythmia services, cardiac catheterization, cardiovascular imaging, cardiothoracic surgery, heart failure care, and heart transplantation. Supplementing these services, our team provides support services such as preconception counseling, high-risk pregnancy care, genetic testing, nutrition counseling and transplant medicine. Pauley’s ACHD providers are board certified in cardiology and ACHD, giving them the training and experience necessary to treat a wide range of moderate to complex congenital heart defects.
We are excited to partner with UVA Children’s to ensure children and families in Virginia have convenient access to high-quality congenital heart care. Through this new collaboration, children will receive surgery with the surgeon and at the hospital that best meets their medical needs, while keeping them as close to home and their support system as possible.
