The webinar will be an opportunity to review some of the cardiac concerns that can arise with social gatherings or parties, specifically those activities that may result in cardiac arrhythmias or other acute symptoms. Some tactics for minimizing the likelihood of developing acute symptoms while still having a good time will be reviewed, as well as a discussion of avoiding behaviors that may also have long term consequences (beyond ending up on YouTube).

Contraception and the ACHD Survivor

Have questions about contraception? Disty Pearson has spoken nationally on issues of contraception and how they affect the ACHD community. She will give an overview of the contraceptive challenges and choices for the ACHD survivor.
Starting from the importance of understanding the various obstacles to education of contraception, Disty will review the many issues facing contraceptive choices. Why, for example, the ACHD cardiologist must discuss issues of birth control with their patients when it is not really fall into the category of cardiology (though it may be a matter of the “heart”). What are the different contraceptive options? Why do some pose more risk for the ACHD patient than others? What are the facts about estrogen and who should not use contraceptives containing estrogens? Who can use an IUD safely?

Dr. Patel and Dr. Shimabukuro address the H1N1 flu virus in reference to people with congenital heart disease. Each is able to give their own expert view on H1N1. Covered are the basic "need-to-know" facts and the more complicated issues about H1N1 as it relates to those with CHD. Anyone concerned about H1N1 should watch this presentation, especially those with CHD.

Amy also discusses the latest developments in national Adult CHD advocacy efforts and how every ACHA member can become involved. Although directed primarily to CHD patients, family members and healthcare professionals are also encouraged to view the webinar if interested.
